Christian Home Education

What is Christian Home Education? It is the opportunity of a lifetime. Our lifetime, as well as our children's. Being able to educate our children at home is a privilege we cannot ignore. Each child is a gift and blessing from the Lord. As parents we have the responsibility to watch over each child that God has put into our earthly care. This responsibility is awesome.

We all want what is best for our children. We worry about how they are doing now and about how they will do in the future. We have a very personal interest in how their lives are shaping up. We want to carefully and thoughtfully cultivate our legacy.

When do we have time to do all this? We only have now. God gives us one day at a time. We wake up each morning, joyful that we have another opportunity to grow. Our children's current ages do not matter. Every day is an opportunity to learn. The most important lesson to convey is how to access knowledge. To instill a love for learning, will last your child a lifetime. You don't have to be an expert in every field. Who says you can't learn right along with your child?

Besides, who is better qualified to teach each unique child than his or her own parents. We are the ones who love and care for our child. We are the ones who would give our own life for our child. Are we willing to give up our "free time" or our "career" to take this opportunity of a lifetime? This is a very personal and serious question. Will it be easy? No. Will it be worth it? Yes.

Anyplace that you call home can be a workable location for education. There are opportunities abounding everywhere. Do you live in the city? The country? Do you travel from here to there? Use the resources that are around you. Every day can be new and exciting.

How do we know what subjects to teach? An adult has to know how to find out information, communicate well and how to reason things out. (This used to be called the three R's.) Beyond these basics, everything you would present to your child would simply be an introduction. Science, technology, historical findings, are all changing so rapidly it would be impossible to know a subject completely. So, to whet an appetite and equip each child with the tools to proceed, is the education for a lifetime.

In this current time we live, there are many that have gone before us in this home schooling venture. There is an enormous amount of information available. The place to start would be to find a local support group. Encouragement from other families striving to accomplish the same goal is invaluable.

Remember to focus on reading, writing and 'rithmatic, the rest is uniquely up to you!
